Occuity PM1 clinical trial study published in Journal Ophthalmic Physiological Optics

Medtech company Occuity has announced the publication in the Journal of Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics (OPO) of the paper on the Occuity PM1 clinical trial results.

The trials were conducted to analyse the repeatability of central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements taken with the PM1 pachymeter and to assess its agreement with ultrasound biometry and two commercially-available optical biometers in participants with normal eyes.

The clinical trial and subsequent report was conceptualised, conducted and analysed by a team of experienced optometrists, including Professor John Lawrenson of City University and Simranjit Gill, Isra Masuid and Fardip Rashid of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The extensive report highlighted the following key findings:

  • ?????Central corneal thickness (CCT) is an important clinical measurement in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma and certain corneal dystrophies; it also provides useful information prior to refractive surgery.
  • ?????The Occuity PM1 pachymeter is a new handheld, non-contact pachymeter that uses confocal technology to measure CCT. The device showed excellent precision for CCT measurements across a range of corneal thicknesses in normal eyes.
  • ?????The PM1 pachymeter provides a safe and easy-to-use alternative to ultrasound pachymetry that could facilitate an increased uptake of pachymetry in routine optometric practice.

The clinical trial report concluded:

“The PM1 pachymeter shows excellent precision for CCT measurements across a range of corneal thicknesses in normal eyes and provides a safe and easy-to-use alternative to ultrasound pachymetry.”

Occuity CEO, Dan Daly, speaking about the upcoming launch of the PM1 Pachymeter, said:

“With the clinical trials demonstrating that the performance of the PM1 is excellent and comparable to current market options, we’re confident that with its significant non-contact, handheld advantages, the PM1 offers an excellent solution.

“We’re looking forward to introducing the PM1 to the market and have signed up distributors across Europe and are now in conversations with distributors in APAC and North America.”

The Occuity PM1 is currently in the process of CE marking ahead of a release later in the year.
