New national initiative will support individuals on neurodiversity waiting lists

A new first-of-its kind national online hub launched has launched today to support individuals who are on a waiting list for a

Nicola Lathey is Head of Therapy at The Owl Centre and spokesperson for Waiting Well.

She said: “We’re at breaking point, with thousands of individuals up and down the country in an Autism and ADHD diagnosis limbo – without hope, guidance or support.

“The only communication individuals receive is a letter confirming their place on the waiting list. Yet, the NHS does not offer specific support on how to manage these waiting lists, existing community resources are patchy at best, and those who are waiting worry about being judged or misunderstood by healthcare professionals, adding to the emotional burden of being in this limbo.

“This is simply not good enough.”

With average NHS assessment waiting times for autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent conditions now extending for two+ years in most areas across the country, many individuals experience frustration, distress, isolation, and a lack of support while awaiting a formal diagnosis.

Waiting Well aims to bridge this critical gap for families and individuals who may identify as neurodivergent.

The new initiative will equip families and individuals with practical tools, actionable advice and evidence-based strategies that can be implemented immediately without any additional financial burden.

The concept for the initiative was originally born from the frustrations and distress expressed by over 7,000 individuals across a number of NHS Trusts, who are currently on a waiting list.

Lathey said: “We’ve launched Waiting Well to ensure that no one falls through the cracks, simply because they are waiting for an assessment.

“Importantly, starting supportive measures early, it can alleviate some of the uncertainty and stress associated with long waiting times.

“Expert support cannot be a privilege of those who have already been diagnosed.

“We’re delighted that this April – to make World Autism Acceptance Month – and with the support of The National Lottery Community Fund, we can start to right a wrong and ensure it is a right for everyone navigating this journey.”
